HCMS Living Mural Project

As we prepare to celebrate Hill Country Middle School’s 50th anniversary in 2025, we are thrilled to create an interactive experience that honors the legacy of the original 1982 mural. This beloved mural, painted by students and displayed at HCMS for over 40 years, was recently digitally preserved and replaced with a new mural that reflects the experiences of today’s students. We plan to debut this project during next year’s anniversary celebration, and we invite you to participate.

If you are a former Hill Country Middle School student, teacher, or staff member, we welcome your memories and reflections about the 1982 mural. The original artwork featured many references to the Eanes community, capturing images of local landmarks such as shopping centers, the 360/Mopac construction, and Lake Austin—memorializing the physical and cultural heart of Westlake. By sharing your experiences, you can help educate current and future Cougars about the mural’s significance and lasting impact on our school community.

Ways you can participate:

  • Submit a written memory or personal reflection about the mural.
  • Record a video or audio story sharing your experience.
  • Contribute photos from yearbooks or personal collections that feature the mural.
  • Share any other form of recollection that best captures your connection to this piece of HCMS history.

No detail is too small!

If you’re unsure how to begin, consider these prompts:

  • Did you help design or paint the mural?
  • Were you a model for any of the characters?
  • What were your favorite businesses or community locations featured?
  • Do you recall any special events that took place in front of the mural?

Please send all submissions or inquiries to hcmslivingmural@eanesisd.net.

We look forward to receiving your contributions and celebrating this important milestone together.
