Pitch Night Winners Feature Student Businesses with Life-Saving Innovations

Despite a difficult Spring for Eanes ISD’s student entrepreneurs, they learned firsthand about resiliency and how to pivot their business ideas in the midst of a national pandemic. Thursday, the Westlake Business Incubator announced its first and second prize student business teams receiving a grant to launch their businesses and awarded the prestigious honor to take the Eanes Accelerator class next year. This year the “Shark Tank” Pitch Night winners were:

First Place—LockOn, a Bluetooth trigger guard for guns. First place receives a grant of $15,000* to develop their intellectual property and launch their business next year. https://www.lockontriggerguards.com

Second Place—Janus Tag, a QR Code that can be attached to a child's clothing, backpack, etc... to contact guardians if lost. Second place receives a $5,000* grant. https://sites.google.com/view/janustag/home

We would like to thank our donors for helping to make this program possible for our students. Students winning First Place will receive $15,000 funded by Lightspeed and AlertMedia. Students winning Second Place will receive $5,000 funded by Inchbug. All grants and award money are funded privately by the Westlake Innovation Fund.

More than 100 Westlake High School students have formed teams and have been testing their business concepts all year as part of the Business Incubator Entrepreneur course. The Business Incubator class is in its fourth year and is a rigorous entrepreneurial class based on the Lean Startup method. In the program, students acquire foundational business concepts, then apply those concepts to the team’s new business idea. From concept to Minimum Viable Product to Pitch, students are hypothesizing, testing, adapting and learning. Importantly, they work and learn in teams. The program culminates each year with “Shark Tank” Pitch Night where venture capitalists select the most marketable businesses.
