Eanes ISD Leverages Solar Energy to Offset Budget Shortfall

Eanes ISD is leveraging its solar energy program, which is projected to generate approximately $700,000 in annual savings toward addressing the district’s $3.3 million budget shortfall.

Facing the dual challenges of rising operational costs and stagnant state funding, Eanes ISD has sought innovative, sustainable ways to manage expenses while remaining committed to academic excellence. As part of the 2023 Bond program, community members approved an investment in a districtwide solar initiative designed to reduce energy costs and promote environmental responsibility.

“The solar energy program represents a win for both our district and our community,” said Chris Scott, Eanes ISD Chief Financial Officer. “By leveraging $3.5 million in Austin Energy rebates and $2.5 million in federal incentives, we’ve expanded our solar capacity and are now saving approximately half of the district’s annual electricity costs. It’s a clear example of fiscal responsibility and innovation working together to benefit our schools.”

Solar arrays have been installed across eight EISD campuses, with the systems projected to generate significant long-term savings that will be reinvested into district operations.

Following a competitive RFP process, Axis Solar of Austin was selected to lead the installation project. The company’s deep community roots - its owners are EISD residents and active members of the Eanes Elementary PTO and Eanes Education Foundation -brought an added layer of trust and collaboration to the partnership.

“Eanes ISD is leading by example,” said Graeme Walker, Co-Founder of Axis Solar. “This project shows that sustainability and smart financial planning can go hand in hand to benefit students, schools and taxpayers alike. As both a parent in the district and a local business owner, I’m proud our team can contribute to a project that invests in the future of our community.”

The success of the Eanes ISD solar initiative is already drawing attention across Texas, with many regarding it as a model for achieving financial stability while advancing renewable energy goals. This Portfolio recently won the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Austin Impact Award for Most Influential Project. At 4.75 megawatts, the portfolio is the largest educational solar installation in Austin, surpassing similar efforts by UT, ACC, and AISD. The ULI award honors projects that create a lasting positive impact on the broader community and built environment. Eanes ISD’s solar program stands as a model for innovation, community benefit and long-term sustainability.
