Superintendent's Report
As we move closer to the Board's consideration to call a bond election in January, the Board heard more information on bond-related topics such as the final category review, bond capacity and a report from the Digital Learning Task Force. Please note: we have numerous opportunities for discussion and involvement, which are listed online.
We also bid adieu to Trustee Julia Webber, who is resigning from the Board and moving to France. We are incredibly thankful for Julia's passion and commitment to education. Her service and smile will be missed.

Potential 2019 Bond Discussions Continue
The Board heard discussions on the final table of items (Student Programs & Support) in connection with a potential 2019 Bond. The categories in discussion are: Safety, Student Programs, Energy and Facilities. Each category began discussion at the Bond Advisory Committee then was presented to the Board.

Bond Capacity - Current and Future
The Board was presented the current bond capacity as well as what it is anticipated in the future. During its current discussions, the Board has indicated they do not intend to raise the tax rate if they decide to call a bond in 2019.

Digital Learning Task Force Recommendations
Following several meetings, public forums, focus groups, site visits and surveys, the Digital Learning Task Force presented its recommendations at the December board meeting. Some of the DLTF recommendations include:
  • Continue 1:1 devices, differentiated by level
  • Increase community engagement/communication around how digital tools are utilized in the classroom
  • Implement at-home filters on devices and screen-time reporting
  • Improve education for students on managing digital distractions
  • Investigate audio/visual alternatives for classrooms

New Course Proposals Approved
The Board approved two new Westlake HS course offerings for the 2019-20 school year. New course development is guided by the district's mission and is in response to student interest and innovative trends. New next year are Art II Photography and PE for the Mind, Body & Spirit.

The Board recognized Coach Bert Bonnecarre and the Westlake High School Girls Cross Country team for a tremendous season. After a third-place finish at regionals, the girls qualified for state for the first time in 12 years.
Future Meetings
The January study session is January 15 (6pm open session) and the regular meeting is January 29 (7pm open session).
