Board of Trustees Highlights
An Update from the Eanes ISD Board of Trustees
Superintendent's Report

April is upon us and thankfully, the weather is finally reminding us why we love living in Central Texas! We are barreling towards the end of the school year with several important discussions and decisions to come before summer. I invite you to participate as you are able.

In March, the Board heard reports on several topics including next year's enrollment projections, a proposal to re-purpose space at Westlake High School, the 2019-20 calendar and more. We also continued discussions on determining a timeline and process for a potential bond, which will continue discussions throughout the Spring and beyond.

See a synopsis of the March meetings below. The full Board agenda packets are online.
Discussions Continue on Bond Planning

The Board continued its discussions about planning for the next few years, including a potential bond. The Board reviewed bond capacity and the schedule for paying off debt as well as reviewed an outline reflecting critical needs that may need to be included in the next bond. After discussions, the Board agreed with the administrative leadership's recommendation to consider planning for a May 2019 bond referendum.

Trustees also discussed the formation of a future-focused advisory committee that will eventually be charged with looking beyond a May 2019 bond to analyze and identify long-term strategic needs and potentially innovative projects in Eanes ISD. More discussions and planning for community participation will be announced.

Enrollment Projections for 2018-19

The Board was presented preliminary enrollment projections for next school year. The projections are based on current numbers along with the demographer's estimates. Once enrollment verification begins and Kindergarten Round-Up is complete, the District will have more definitive numbers.

Re-Purposing Space at Westlake HS

The Board heard a proposal to re-purpose non-instructional space at Westlake HS into instructional space using 2015 Bond program funds. The Network Operations Center (NOC) where the Technology Department was housed near the Chap Court, will be renovated and re-purposed to create a space where the arts and sciences will come together to solve problems, create, and inspire. Once the space is complete, it will serve as a design lab for Computer Science classes and the new Swift Coding course.

Student Calendars Approved

At the March meetings, the Board discussed the 2018-19 and 2019-20 calendars. Like most area school districts, Eanes ISD traditionally aligns its spring vacation with the University of Texas' spring vacation. Because of this, the 2019 Spring Break will not align with the SXSW music and entertainment festival.

Because UT has not released the 2020 Spring Break dates, the Eanes ISD 2019-20 Spring Break is tentative.

Both school-year calendars include a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Institute for Excellence Leadership Program

The Trustees were presented an update on a proposed transition from the current Partnership for Teacher Excellence Program (PTEP) to an in-house leadership development curriculum called the Institute for Excellence. This concept has been vetted by an informal planning team of administrators and teachers, has been approved by the Eanes Education Foundation (EEF) Board and Executive Committee, and reviewed again by the superintendent's cabinet. EEF has generously endorsed the pilot with a commitment of $100,000 for at least three and possibly up to four years.
