Parental Request for a Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE) through Special Education

Parents or guardians of a student residing in Eanes ISD who suspect their child has a disability and may need special education services may request an evaluation for special education services at any time. Special education and related services are those necessary for the student to make progress in school. This is in accordance with the Child Find obligations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Child Find is the local school district’s obligation to identify, locate, and evaluate every child who may have a disability requiring special education services.

Requests for evaluation may be made either verbally or in writing. If a request is made verbally, the District is under no obligation to follow state timelines in responding to that request. For that reason, parents are highly encouraged to provide a written request.

Upon receipt of the written request for evaluation, Eanes ISD has fifteen (15) school days to respond. The District must provide 1) prior written notice of its proposal to conduct an evaluation, a copy of the Notice of Procedural Safeguards, and the opportunity to give written consent for the evaluation; OR 2) prior written notice of its refusal to evaluate the child and a copy of the Notice of Procedural Safeguards.
