Instructional Resources

Instructional materials and library books are both considered to be instructional resources; however, they are not the same.  Libraries are considered places for voluntary inquiry. Instructional materials are selected, approved and driven by the state’s adoption process and must align with and support the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which are required by the state. School districts have more flexibility in selecting library books, as students are not required to read these. There are key differences between instructional resources used in classroom instruction and library books, which is shown in the following graphic from the Texas Association of School Boards:
