Penny Swap 2020

Eanes ISD voters approved the proposed Penny Swap, or Proposition A, by 63 percent during the Nov. 3 election, adding an estimated $3.3 million of non-recapturable funds to the district’s operating budget without a tax rate increase. The election engaged more than 21,000 voters who took time to participate at the polls. According to the Travis County Elections website, all votes are counted but results are unofficial until certified by Travis County.

“We are incredibly thankful to our community for its support of our students, teachers and staff and voting to keep $3.3 million local,” said Superintendent Dr. Tom Leonard. “This approval is crucial to our budget and our efforts to recruit and retain quality staff, maintain class sizes and operate with a small surplus rather than a deficit.”

The Board of Trustees expressed gratitude to the Eanes ISD community citing the important role the community plays in providing students an exceptional education.
“During these unprecedented times, it is wonderful to see our school district continues to have the support of the community,” said Board President Jennifer Champagne. “That backing plays an important role in maintaining a quality education for our children and a supportive environment for our staff. We are thankful, humbled and committed to continuing a path of excellence in our schools.”

Each year Eanes ISD sends more money back to the state than it keeps because of recapture, totaling more than $1.1 billion since recapture began. The Penny Swap/Prop A increases the amount of local dollars ($3.3M) Eanes ISD is able to keep in the district for operations. Even as a state recapture district, Eanes ISD has maintained one of the lowest ISD tax rates in Central Texas and has consistently demonstrated a proven track record as fiscally responsible while providing a high-quality education to students.

Two new Eanes ISD trustees were also elected while a third was re-elected. The election was originally scheduled for May but was rescheduled for Nov. 3 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Trustee election results are listed below:

Place 1 -- Kim McMath
Place 2 -- Laura Clark
Place 3 – John Havenstrite (re-elected for second term)

Election Day is November 3, 2020.

Early Voting runs October 13 through October 30.
