Third Grade Mathematics Establishing Routines
What Is Math Workshop?
Math workshop consists of several components which could occur at different times of the day, including:
- Daily Routines
- Calendar
- Number Talks
- Whole Group Instruction
- Mini-lesson
- Teacher Modeling
- Guided Practice
- Small Group Work
- Guided Math Instruction
- Guided Practice
- Math Centers/Stations
- Partner Work
- Independent Practice
Weeks 1 & 2, Establishing Routines and Procedures for Math Workshop
The focus of Week 1 is to introduce students to the purpose and format of Math Workshop. It is important to communicate that workstation tasks are designed to specifically meet their needs as mathematicians and to help each of them grow. During the first five days, students participate in discussions about Math Workshop, help create anchor charts that will serve as visual reminders of expectations, practice routines and procedures, and explore manipulatives.
Week 3, Adding Content and Building Stamina
At this time, your whole group instruction/mini-lesson may begin to include more mathematical content. Students will continue to build stamina and maintain focus on workstation tasks. They will practice storage and retrieval of workstations and/or materials. It’s critical to debrief at the end of each lesson and allow students to self-assess their work habits. The success of Math Workshop hinges on student self-management, working cooperatively, and building independence.
Week 4 and Beyond, Student Independence and Small Group Instruction
Whole group instruction/mini-lesson time will increase. Students continue to build stamina, work cooperatively, and build independence in workstations. As student independence increases, teachers have the opportunity to provide small group instruction.
