What is an LMS?

A Learning Management System (LMS) is an online education platform designed to streamline the educational experience for students, teachers, and parents. But it’s not just for remote or online learning! An LMS supports in-person learning and simplifies the day-to-day academic experience by collecting educational tools in one place where they’re accessible all the time.

An LMS functions as a centralized hub where teachers can post resources, assignments, assessments, feedback, and grades. Students can access their textbooks and coursework in one place, submit assignments, receive feedback, and keep better track of their learning. Parents have quicker access to insights into their students’ progress, centralized announcements/calendars to keep track of everything going on at school, and opt-in notifications.

Benefits of using an LMS include: 

  1. 24/7 access to learning materials, all in one place. Students and parents can access assignments, study materials, and important announcements any time, without having to remember if they were in an email or was posted in Seesaw or written down in class.
  2. Improved communication. Teachers can communicate with students and parents through the platform to send updates, reminders, or feedback.
  3. Organization and structure. The LMS organizes academic content in one location, making it easier for students to track their progress and stay on top of their work. 
  4. Interactive learning. Many LMS platforms include tools for quizzes, discussions, and interactive learning activities, allowing students to engage with the material in more dynamic ways. Teachers can customize learning paths, so students can be guided onto their next steps based on their instructional or practice needs, or given a choice of methods to demonstrate mastery of the material.
  5. Synchronization. The LMS will have two-way communication with Skyward, meaning that classes will automatically be rostered from Skyward to the LMS and grades posted in the LMS will transfer to Skyward. Observer roles will automatically connect with their child's account, so there's no need to get an access code from every teacher.

By making communication, organization, and learning more efficient, an LMS helps students and families stay on track throughout the school year.
