Building Self-Awareness and Self-Management Skills in 2020

The second nine weeks of the 2020-21 school year is upon us, and what a ride it’s been up until this point.  From the time we went into Remote Learning last March until now, parents, students, and Eanes ISD staff have had to roll with the punches. We were all required to reflect on our values and to build grit.  Reflection and resiliency are skills that we as parents and educators want to build within our students and ourselves.  We want our children to be reflective so that they can learn from their failures.  We want our children to be resilient so that they can learn to solve their own problems and pick themselves back up when they fail.  Reflection is a form of self-awareness, and resiliency is derived from self-management.

Self-Awareness and Self-Management are two of the five core competencies of Social Emotional Learning (SEL).  Both of these competencies are the focus during the second nine weeks of the school year.  CASEL (The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) defines Self-Awareness as “the ability to understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts.”  CASEL defines Self-Management as “the ability to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations and to achieve goals and aspirations.” (https://casel.org/core-competencies/

To be healthy, we need to know ourselves well enough to know when we need a break.  Self-care is critical in supporting our ability to be resilient in the face of challenges and adversity.  Some stressors are unavoidable, but a healthy balance of hard work and self-care will give all of us a better chance for success.  As we enter this hectic time of the year, we hope that you will find that balance of doing a job well while also enjoying the gift of time with each other.
