English as a Second Language (ESL)
We offer English as a Second Language instruction on all campuses. Specially trained teachers provide support in acquiring English as well as grade level content. for "students of limited English proficiency (LEP) which means a student whose primary language is other than English and whose language skills are such that the student has difficulty performing ordinary classwork in English." (Texas Education Code, Chapter 29.051)
Students are identified for assessment upon enrollment through the Home Language Survey. State recognized assessment data is analyzed by a Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) made up of a specialist, parent in the district and campus administrator. Intervention and accommodations are provided for the student based on a proficiency level ranging from beginning to advanced. Each student identified as LEP will be monitored through state assessment system for ELLs, Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) until an advanced high level is achieved to exit limited proficiency status.
