Everyone has their favorite holiday. For me, Thanksgiving has always been special. Growing up in the Midwest, I believe it is due to the memories of being w ith loved ones, some now departed, the cooling temperatures and the changing of the leaves. As an adult, I have fallen in love with the concept - the holiday where no gifts are exchanged; the holiday where we eat food as a family; the holiday where we give thanks for all we have and to those who support us throughout the year.
Earlier this school year, I received an email telling me about a special individual who plays an important role in ensuring the safety of children in Eanes ISD every day. Ms. Debra, as the students affectionately call her, has been a crossing guard in our district for close to seven years.
Reading the email, it quickly became obvious to me that Ms. Debra is a very special person. Not only is she at her post every day, rain or shine, escorting students from Cedar Creek Elementary and Hill Country Middle School across Pinnacle Dr., she also greets the children by name, trims bushes that could create a blind spot for motorists and even monitors bee hives that may be too close for comfort.
Ms. Debra is a representative of many who are integral parts of what makes the Eanes ISD community special. Because of that, we decided to surprise and thank her, using the talents of the chorus at Cedar Creek Elementary under the direction of Ms. Creel, and the skills of Westlake High School Film students with guidance from teacher Emily McIntyre.
As we head into the Thanksgiving holiday, please enjoy this short video featuring the beautiful voices of the Eagle Choir, expressing their thanks to an incredible woman.
For all, I wish you a good meal with family or friends, and some time to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for in our lives. Personally, I want to thank you for all of the support that you provide to our schools, whether as an employee or through volunteering, and the financial support you provide through property taxes, donations to the Eanes Education Foundation and/or the many other organizations supporting our schools and programs. Without your support, we would not be the special haven where our children can thrive and develop.
Thank you and have a great holiday.
PS Really, really, really thankful da Cubs finally did it. ;).
