26 National Merit Finalists Named

Westlake High School announced its 26 finalists in the 2012-13 National Merit Scholarship Program today. The selection of some 8,300 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 15,000 Finalists is now in progress.

To become finalists, a student must have an outstanding high school academic record, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and submit SAT scores that confirm his/her earlier qualifying test performance.

More than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

The National Merit process started with more than 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 schools who took the Preliminary SAT test in 2011; semifinalists were the highest-scoring participants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
