WHY: The Hill Country MS track and field was replaced with synthetic turf out of funds from the May 2011 Bond Program. The project included replacing the subsoil with stabilized, lime-injected soil, replacing the grass with synthetic turf and installing a drainage system to help offset erosion. Engineers determined this to be the most cost-effective long-term solution because of the unstable clay subsoil that caused the track to bump and dip. Water runoff coupled with irrigation further destabilized the subsurface.
