Current projects and issues:
1. Thawsdays! All campuses have opted to move to the Thawsdays model for desktop changes for their staff. We've implemented those changes at all schools. Based on the drop in related work orders, phone calls, etc., this appears to be very a very successful rollout. Andy and others continue to improved the tools available. Most recently, he made it easier for staff to get their desktops thawed on non-thawsdays for critical situations.
2. Repair and Rapport. We are building a plan to place a technician at each campus, each day for part of the morning. This plan was presented to principals on Tuesday, March 8th for feedback and for development.
3. Improving the workstation re-imaging process. Chris Woehl will be leading our efforts to revamp this program so that we can deliver new images and updates faster and more reliably.
4. Windows 7. We see a lot of good things in this OS, but budget constraints have forced us to shelve plans to migrate to the new OS for another year. With a successful bond package and newer computers, the cost to migrate will go down. We intend to move our testing process via virtual machines to the fall and instead focus on optimizing the imaging and proces in under XP.
5. Office software. Right now, we have a mix of MS office 2003 and MS Office 2007 installed as a standard in the district. Open Office is also on most computers and as the primary office product on the netbooks Dell 2110). It would cost us over $200,000 in licensing costs alone to move to MS 2010 as the standard. There is, rightfully, no appetite to trade teacher positions for MS Office software upgrades. The current plan is to stabilize MS Office at 2007 through new computer purchases (bond funds) for the next two years while we move our standard to Open Office and Google Docs. Open Office and Google Docs have pros and cons when compared to MS Office, but by far the biggest pro item is the $0 licensing fees.
Coming soon...
1. Remote Access to virtual district workstations (April 2011 - delay due to licensing resolved.)
2. New e-mail system and more. GMail and more is on the way! (Summer 2011)
3. Evaluation and selection of possible replacement anti-virus software.
4. Evaluation and possible replacement of helpdesk software to improve reporting and accelerate trouble ticket resolution.
